Notations of Decimal Numbers

This page collects the notations of decimal numbers with the practice of the notation census.

Floating point numbers notations vary by the usage of alphabet of digits, the direction, the decimal separator and the thousands separator.

References

The Unicode Consortium is collecting all this information following their effort to make a census of all characters; see the number patterns at Unicode CLDR which indicate at least 8 ways of encoding the digits.

Semantically, decimal numbers are representing rational numbers in the form of a sequence of digits. See, among others:

• MathML3's specification of the cn element
• MathWorld's Decimal, Decimal Point, Decimal Comma, and Repeating Decimal.

In Saudi math book for grade V we find in page 60 an example shows the decimal point in Arabic context (the book uses comma instead of point).

As found in Mathematics for Applied Science book, the example represents \(pi\) and it uses comma instead of point.
